The Benefits of Citrulline Malate

Citrulline Malate (often found as an ingredient in pre-workouts and BCAAs) is an amino acid that results from the combination of ornithine and carbamoyl phosphate. This fusion occurs during the urea cycle, during which your body disposes of its nitrogen waste. It also happens to be a byproduct of the bodies conversion of nitric oxide. Know that you know this, you may be wondering what benefits citrulline malate may have for your workout.

One of the biggest and most important benefits of citrulline malate is a decrease in muscle fatigue. One of the causes of muscle fatigue is a build-up of ammonia. As we’ve mentioned earlier, citrulline malate is produced during the urea cycle, which disposes of nitrogen waste. Ammonia is made of three nitrogen molecules.  So when you supplement yourself with citrulline malate, you’re kicking your urea cycle into overdrive, effectively removing a large amount of ammonia from your body before it can cause muscle fatigue. This is supported by a 2010 study conducted by Spanish researchers, who gave citrulline malate to male strength athletes to see how it affected their bench press workouts. These athletes were able to do 50% more reps than the group that had been given a placebo without experiencing muscle fatigue.

But that’s not the only benefit citrulline malate has for your muscles. It’s been proven that citrulline malate can also improve your ability to build muscle. When your body takes in excess citrulline malate, it increases the amount of arginine in your blood, which leads to the production of more nitric oxide. Nitric Oxide, or NO for short, is responsible for controlling the circulation of blood, as well as affecting the release of hormones and adrenalin. Having more NO in your body leads to an increase in blood circulation, which means more nutrients will be delivered to your muscles. This means that your muscles will perform for longer without tiring, and get bigger pumps, leading to increased growth.

So now that you know more about what citrulline malate can do for your body, you may be wondering what kind of effects it might have on your health. Thankfully, citrulline malate has little to no negative side effects, so it’s largely safe to take. In fact, the worst effect the stuff might have on you is a slight discomfort in your stomach, and even that’s a mostly rare occurrence. And on top of that, citrulline malate isn’t broken down as quickly as arginine in the liver, which means that its benefits last for much longer, giving it an edge over arginine supplements.

In short, while there’s still a lot to learn about citrulline malate, current research on this supplement has proven to be very promising. Providing benefits for muscle growth and stamina, citrulline malate is a great supplement for those who train hard at the gym, and want to push your workout to the next level. If you’re looking for a supplement to give you that extra boost you need to your workout, then this is the one for you.
