The Illusion Of Genius

Mar 19 2018 0 Comments

Genius. This is a term that is thrown around our society in an extremely flawed context. When we hear the word genius we picture a brilliant mind sitting in a laboratory figuring things out with minimal effort. Our society has led us to believe that being a genius is something you are born with; an innate ability to create and achieve with minimal effort, a brilliant mind. Of course, there are certain geniuses in the world who were born brilliant, but that isn't the case with every one of them. In fact, almost every “genius” has battled through adversity and several obstacles on route to their goal. Aside from this, we will discuss what constitutes a genius and how I believe each and every person is a genius in their own respect. Tapping into this is key to living the life you have always dreamed of. Let's get into it!

The Lie of Genius

Genius doesn't just happen out of nowhere. You become a genius by doing and working, each and everyday. Don't believe me? Do you think eminem became the rapper he is today without writing thousands of songs that the public never heard?

Do you think Thomas Edison invented the light bulb on his first try? No! In fact, he failed over 500 times (that we know of) before eventually creating the light bulb and countless other amazing inventions. Edison’s genius was realised through continually doing, failing, and doing again. A prime example of finding genius by doing is the story of the rapper Russ. You may know of him because his recent album “There's Really a Wolf” went platinum. What you probably don't know about him is that he dropped 10 albums and they all flopped before he finally cracked the code and made it big on the rap scene. Don’t wait around to become a genius. Work at something you love and let the genius inside you unfold naturally.

Your Genius and My Genius are Two Different Things

Don't let society tell you what makes a genius. Genius comes in so many different forms. You don't need to be great with math, science or english to be a genius. Some of the world’s most radically successful people suck at all three. You can be a genius with math, music, communication, emotional intelligence, marketing, building, and a million other things. There is no definitive, single factor that makes someone a genius. Inside you there is a genius. Self reflect, become self aware and find your genius. It doesn't matter if you dropped out of University, got a 45% on your last midterm or failed at your first business venture. Like we spoke about above, genius can only be found and created through doing. Find your genius.

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, magic, and power in it. Begin it now”
