The Importance of Water in Your Diet

For some time now, health professionals have stressed the importance of integrating numerous glasses of water into your diet each day. According to these experts, drinking 8-10 glasses of water will generate benefits for your overall health. This sounds great, but you may wonder why drinking water is so essential. Well, the human body is made up of approximately 60% water, therefore, in order to maintain your health it is essential to fuel your body and provide it the hydration it needs. This percentage alone clearly indicates how important water truly is.

How Much Water Should I Drink?

The daily recommended intake of water can differ from person to person. There are a number of factors that play into someone’s suggested amount, such as, a person’s age, gender and even their height and weight.  Yet, there is a generalized benchmark that health professionals advise. For instance, the National Academies Press suggests that men should consume around 13 cups a day, while women, should drink around 9. It is important to note that this does not take into account individual circumstances. For example, if you have been partaking in strenuous exercise then you will need to drink more as your body will need to replace the fluid lost through sweat. In addition, those of you who live in a warmer climate, keep in mind that you will need to replace the water lost through perspiration throughout the day.

The Importance of Getting Enough Water

Short story, water is important. It helps with numerous aspects related to your health. For example, it can aid in calorie control. When you experience thirst, fueling your body with water opposed to a fizzy, sugary, or even an alcoholic drink will automatically minimize your calorie count. Not to mention your kidneys will also thank you. This probably doesn't come a surprise but since your kidneys are responsible for taking toxins out of your body and cleansing you on the inside, by drinking water you are helping them do their job. If you dont believe it, try drinking your recommended intake - you will literally see proof of water working it’s magic. When you consume enough water your kidneys are able to help and the colour of your urine will become more clear, which is a good sign! This shows that you are doing a good job of hydrating your body!

Water Helps With Recovery

Water provides energy for your muscles. Without water, your muscles are bound to experience a decrease in effectiveness. Water hydration acts as a service to energize your muscles, preventing them from tiring throughout the day or a workout, therefore allowing you to work at your maximum potential. Your body loses water in different ways, for example, when you sweat from exercise the water levels in your body begin to decline, this weakens its ability to provide nutrients for your muscles, and prevents muscle growth. Drinking water counters this. Consuming a lots of water during exercise helps your body to deliver blood and oxygen to your muscles. Lacking blood and oxygen can result in cramps, pain in your muscles, as well as spasms, and as mentioned before, slow down muscle growth.

Your Overall Health and Water

The benefits of drinking water are endless. Perks are not only gained internally but also externally. One external benefit is exposed through your skin. Water can help your skin to look healthier, keeping it looking fresh and bright. Dehydration, on the other hand, can cause issues for your skin such as looking tired or wrinkled. Another benefit of drinking more water is regulated bowel movements, water is a natural source that can act as a flush to keep up the natural flow of each movement and avoid constipation.

Remember, it is important to listen to your body and look for signs it may be giving you. If you are feeling fatigued or you are strenuously exercising, remember to stay hydrated, and look at the colour of your urine. If it is clear or close to clear this is a sign that your body is well hydrated. If it is more coloured, that means you are dehydrated and your urine is not as diluted as it should be.

Water is one of natures best gifts to humans, so be sure to treat your body well and drink lots of it!
